Study: 62% of Americans Get News from Social Media

A new Pew Research Center poll out yesterday found that a substantial majority of Americans, 62 percent, now get news from social media platforms. Facebook is the top social media news source, with 66 percent of its U.S. audience getting news from the site. That’s up significantly from just three years ago, when it was 47 percent. Other social media outlets people are getting news from include Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit and LinkedIn. But this doesn’t mean people who get news via social media, whether accidentally or on purpose, don’t look at traditional media at all. The study found, for instance, that 39 percent of Facebook users still watch the local news and 15 percent still even read newspapers.
