Moms Are Choosing to Have Their Babies in Warmer Months

Having babies in the spring and summer is apparently the trendy thing to do in the U.S. Oxford University and Surrey University researchers looked at eight years of birth data from the U.S. and found that new moms are actively choosing to have their babies in the spring and summer months. Study leader, Dr. Climent Quintana-Domeque says, “Mothers have a clear desire to target the “good” seasons of birth of spring and summer– and often manage to do so.” They also found a woman’s job played a role in when she chose to have children, with those in education “overwhelmingly” targeting spring and summer to give birth. Previous studies have shown that babies born in autumn and winter are more likely to develop food allergies, although scientists have been unable to explain why. In U.S. states where winters are the most extreme, younger women are nearly eight percent more likely to give birth in summer than in winter.
