Tapping Your Feet While Listening to Music May be a Subconscious Effort to Mimic the Sound

What song always makes you dance and tap your feet? University of Oslo researchers have found that when we listen to music, we tend to subconsciously simulate the body movements that we believe went into producing the sound, and this helps us to mentally process the music. Study leader, professor Rolf Godøy explains, “Images of sound-producing motion are actively re-created in listening, hence the idea that that motor theory could be the basis for the similarities between sound and body movement when we experience music.”
